The Central Alabama Chapter of the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America (Sickle Cell Foundation), headquartered in Birmingham, provides services to affected persons in 13 Central and East Alabama counties: Jefferson, Shelby, Walker, St. Clair, Blount, Etowah, Randolph, Talladega, Cherokee, Clay, Cleburne, Cullman, and Blount.

The Sickle Cell Foundation was established in 1978 and provides free testing for sickle cell trait, counseling and education .
